Five Practice Sequences

I almost forgot about this practice course I setup and videotaped back on a warm, sunny day in early October. This course is a combination of the problem areas Meeker and I have faced in recent trials. It includes on and off side weave entrances, jump wraps, 270s, and a fair amount of bypassing obvious obstacles or “Snookering” as I’m calling it.

Here’s the setup (of course you should tweak it to make it harder or easier or replace the 12 weave poles with 6 to fit a smaller space):

Sequence 1

Course Sequence 1

The opening allows for a Lead Out or a Rear Cross Learning the Rear CrossRear Cross between 1 and 2. The fun part is how to get from the tunnel to jump 4. I tried handling on both sides of ump 2. You could even back up drawing your dog past jump 2. Then it is a send to the tunnel and dog on left through the teeter. Front or Rear Cross on the landing of the teeter.

Sequence 2

Course Sequence 2

The opening removes the second jump and you now have to manuver past the first tunnel entrance and the now off course jump. Depending on which side of jump 9 you handle on you could Rear Cross or Post Turn Learning the Post TurnPost Turn/Shoulder Pull/Pivot Turn to get to jump 4 and the weaves. As you come around through the starting jump again you have many options for the 270 Handling 270 Degree Jump SequencesBack Side Entry to 270/Training Opportunity - Video270 Degree Jump Sequence before the final jump.

Sequence 3

Course Sequence 3

The course starts with a 90 degree Off Side weave pole entrance. I like a Rear Cross on the take off side of jump 5 to initiate the turn to the tunnel. A Front Cross would work too but you’d have to be able to leave your dog in the weave poles. You then have to decide which side of jump 5/7 to go around to you are in position to get to the tunnel. Then immediately into the 270 coming out of the tunnel to the finish.

Sequence 4

Course Sequence 4

This time it is the harder On Side weave entrance in the opening. From the weaves it is a combination of sequence 1 and 2 through the tunnel. Your handling to the tunnel may be a little harder when you are both going faster… Out of the tunnel is the 270 again but this time there is a Jump Wrap Jump Wrap Handling TipsJump Wrap Handling - With VideoJump Wrap/Wrap on the final jump. Then avoid the off course jump after the tunnel and the off course tunnel after the next to last jump.

Sequence 5

Course Sequence 5

After taking the teeter it is a Serpentine-ish Serpentine Handling TechniquesSerpentine Sequence sequence to the tunnel. Then how to avoid the off course jump on the way to jump 6? From there it is “avoid every other obstacle” to the weaves. In the elongated Threadle Mary Ellen Barry on Threadle HandlingThe Connection Between Threadles and Back SidesSingle Sided Threadle HandlingTraditional Threadle HandlingThreadle Sequence you can use any kind of cross for the turn from 12 to 13.

Here’s the video, with handling errors and my sometimes useful narration. Maybe some of my handling approaches will give you some ideas. I hope you give these a try and have fun!
