Stacie Cwik Intl Course and Small Space Training Sequences
25 Jul 2024
Stacie Cwik designed a fun international style course for her class last week. I liked it so much I extracted a small space section of the course that has multiple “either/or” handling options. I’ve drawn up her original course for a 60x100 space and then my small space section for a 40x60 space.
Here’s the Stacie’s original course:
Here’s the obstacle setup As always, adjust the spacing to fit your space and to insure your dogs’ safety.:
Here are some of the handling challenges in her course:
- Some teams had to work to get a good line to the back side of jump 3.
- At 7 do you push to the back side or threadle wrap the near side of the jump? I preferred the later.
- 8-9 everyone ran dog on left over the dog walk. It was a good test of Spark’s running dog walk skills to make the turn to the weaves. We also used this setup to practice sending to the front and back sides of jump 13.
- 10-11 let’s you push to back side at 11 or threadle wrap 11. It will really depend on how you set the course. I thrashed when drawing it up to figure exactly where to draw jump 11!
- Now the fun parts! Stacie set 14 and 15 as handler’s choice. So depending on your choice you might slice 13 or wrap to the inside.
- Turning left at 13 made taking the front side of 14 straight forward, which make the front side of 15 easier. The backside at 14 and then at 15 was easier if you turn right/slice at 13.
- Either way the threadle slice with the handler possibly behind sets the dog up for the A Frame.
A lot of fun!
I always love sequences where you can practice multiple handling options. I even wrote a series of blog posts on all the ways you can re-use an obstacle setup to “wring out” all the handling options. You can find them here: Backyard Mastery. So I extracted the section from jump 8 to jump 15 and drew it up for a 40x60 space:
Here’s the obstacle setup. If you have more room you can spread out the jumps and the tunnel at the bottom of the diagram:
Have fun!
