Using a Jump Wing as a Training Prop for Back Side/Threadle Slices - Video

In a recent class I was having trouble with Spark finding his take off spot on a jump when I raised his jump height to 24”. Earlier this week Stacie Cwik had mentioned adding a jump wing to the take off side of the jump to help him find a better take off location. Here I show a different color wing so you can see how it is placed:
Here is a video of the jump wing prop in action:
You can see it worked wonderfully. The only difficulty can be if your wings’ design doesn’t let you slide the feet under the other jump wing. I can remove a foot from one side of a wing and slide it up to the other wing with my homemade jump wings. Though you could also make a wing with removable feet just for this purpose.
Of course, there are many props you can use to help your dog find their take-off spot:
- a big cone
- a stack of course number cones
- a section of window screen rolled into a tube shape
- a cylinder of clear plastic
- a piece of rubber tubing attached to the jump wing
- empty snack container barrels
- water bottles
I like this idea because you can quickly take a wing from elsewhere on the course. You don’t really have to fade the jump wing; you can just remove it when the dog is consistently hitting their take off spot.
